Our trip to the Discovery Center yesterday was both fun and enlightening. Outside of learning new material, the Discovery Center reminded me of what we sometimes forget...that exploring can be done right in your own backyard.
Everything outside of the DC was natural from murfree springs to the water trials and the animals that inhabit the area. All of the activities that we completed could be done in a school yard. Yes, some schools may not have a wonderful creek located behind it, but every school has trees and some form of wildlife.
On a sunny day, class can be taken outside to discover what is on the playground or growing in the grass. You don't even have to take on a project as big as the Biodiversity one we read about. The project can simply be testing rain water or looking at the way a worm lives.
Science is all around us and it is important to remember that we don't have to have expensive kits or supplies to teach children science. So, get your kids, grab some looking glasses, and head out to explore!
Allison, I had such a good time watching you at the Discovery Center last night! You were fearless in your investigations of the pond and spring! I think our entire class had a good time!
